TFW 2015 ‘Bloodsucking Bastards’ – movie review

When you think of people stuck in windowless office buildings while working for big corporate companies the first word that usually comes to mind is “soul-less”.  Funny, right? Well, what do you do when these people have become literally that- as in bloodsucking-vampire-soulless?

Directed by Brian James O’Connell (of comedy group Dr. God), Bloodsucking Bastards stars Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods) as overworked Evan, alongside his (kind of ex) girlfriend, Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick) and derpy best friend, Tim (Joey Kern).  When Evan is overlooked for a sales manager position which is given to an old rival of his, Max (Pedro Pascal), things start getting weird around the office.  Evan’s co-workers start coming back paler than usual with a sucspicioully strong work ethic.  Evan and his living pals are forced to fight to save their necks (literally) from the worst boss ever- with tons of blood thrown into the mix.

Bloodsucking Bastards is a great example of a horror comedy done right.  An Office Space with vampires- this film nailed it with the comedy.  The cast did a fantastic job, but Joey Kern stole the show in his role as Tim.  On the horror side, there’s the perfect amount of blood and gore and it’s never overdone, even when exploding bodies are involved.  As well, the makeup and effects looked great and nothing ever comes off too goofy looking.

Aside from some slowness in the beginning of the film, that quickly is replaced with non-stop laughs and once the horror element steps in, it never lets up or lets you down.  Bam snap!

4.5/5
