What to make of ‘The Bye Bye Man’

Yesterday the interwebs were ablaze with the release of the new trailer from STX Entertainment (boy have they been busy) THE BYE BYE MAN. I know it’s a big deal when I’m tagged on the trailer by friends and a quick glance at the comments has everyone questioning what’s going on here. Really what people want to know is will this film be any good? As a critic let me tell you it’s always hard to tell. People are all over the place with their responses to things because we have truly fallen into a group thought type of existence. The trailer looks intriguing and i’m sure it will be filled with scares and jumps so I don’t get why so many people are worried about the THE BYE BYE MAN. As I type the name of the title it’s clear that similar to 2013’s THE BABADOOK the films name just sounds silly. Blame it on viral video phenomenon when you have things like the SLENDER MAN takings everyone’s horror focus. Honestly what Ii get from THE BYE BYE man is nowhere different from films like CANDYMAN or the urban legend of BLOODY MARY. That’s all it is in my opinion and urban tale. I have no qualms with it because essentially that’s where we get most of our horror lineage from. Whether it’s The Lady in White or The Hitchhiker or The Scraping on the Roof it’s all the same. Campfire tales that will live on as long as people are afraid of something. I do think THE BYE BYE MAN will do OK numbers wise because of the initial response from the trailer. More than likely it will be crushed by every Youtube critic out there but that can be said for almost any film that has come out in the past few years regardless of genre.  So what are my thoughts on the film you say? Nothing at all, it’s just another campfire tale but you better believe I will be seeing it with cast involved!

People commit unthinkable acts every day. Time and again, we grapple to understand what drives a person to do such terrible things. But what if all of the questions we’re asking are wrong? What if the source of all evil is not a matter of what…but who?

From the producer of The Strangers and Oculus comes The Bye Bye Man, a chilling horror-thriller that exposes the evil behind the most unspeakable acts committed by man.

When three college friends stumble upon the horrific origins of the Bye Bye Man, they discover that there is only one way to avoid his curse: don’t think it, don’t say it. But once the Bye Bye Man gets inside your head, he takes control. Is there a way to survive his possession?

THE BYE BYE MAN is directed by  Stacy Title and stars Carrie-Anne Moss, Faye Dunaway, Douglas Smith, Cressida  Bonas, Lucien Laviscount and Douglas Jones.
