Drug addicts and horror go hand in hand. From illegal narcotics turning people into zombies to strung out characters fighting off death horror is filled with substance abuse. In cinema, just like life, herion will always be at the top of the list. One of the reasons heroin is so prominent in films is because it never goes away. It’s the addiction that keeps on addicting. In Thomas Jakobsen THE UNRAVELING we come across a man who hides his reintroduction to this drug from his loved ones. After a party he makes a crucial mistake that leads he and his loved ones down a terrorizing path. THE UNRAVELING starts as a slow burn but eventually because a high paced frenetic feature with a calculated ending.
There is much to like with the UNRAVELING even though it starts off pretty slow. The character development is needed to show how much the main character played by Zack Gold has hurt those around him. Still they care dearly for Michael and will stop at no lengths to make him happy. Soon after things become drastic and Michael and his friends may not be able to fight off the evil that follows them. Great scenery and a solid cast are the standouts in THE UNRAVELING but if you can’t find out what’s going on by the climax of the film then you aren’t paying attention. For some viewers they will be hooked to the last scene while others would have hit the snooze bar by the mid way point of the film.
THE UNRAVELING will be a film that will find success in the mainstream audience. It’s a straightforward approach that doesn’t waiver off the beaten path. More seasoned viewers may not enjoy this aspect as it makes the film too predictable. Still it’s an unnerving decent watch for more than 60 percent of the film which is a good thing.
