Hitting theaters this weekend is the Fede Alvarez thriller DON’T BREATHE. Parts home invasion, parts camera tricks, parts serial rapists this film has tons to offer for fans across the spectrum. Soon to be an instant cult classic DON’T BREATHE follows three robbers who look to score big on what they presume to be a helpless blind man. They find out instantly that this savvy veteran of the military and his trusty rottweiler aren’t to be f**d with as he takes them into his world of darkness and silence. DON’T BREATHE is a smart and crafty thriller that helps round up a not so stellar summer for horror in the big cinema.
Fede Alavarez drops the viewer right into the thick of things when the film starts which compliments his inspiring direction. While he will always have a love hate relationship with horror fans for his EVIL DEAD remake, this is his true work showcasing why he is one of the directors to propel horror forward. Stephen Lang gives his always stellar work to the film as the blind man and the main characters played by Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette gave captivating performances as well. DON’T BREATHE is short lived which works well for the dynamic and draws the view in. There really weren’t too many scary parts, but enough sadistic moments to please even the toughest fans. The darkness involved in the film is truly the star as consumes the viewers and takes them into the world of the “victim”. Very solid ending so expect this one to gets some good acclaim from fans outside the horror realm.
Overall I was more than pleased with just the complete entertainment factor of DON’T BREATHE. Fede’s style alone is worth the watch. While not a complete breathe (pun intended) of fresh air in the industry DON’T BREATHE has legs and should get a solid few weeks run in the over superhero and Disney populate theaters.
