The former champion San Francisco Giants Brian Wilson said it best, “let’s get weird”. From the moment the noir looking feature from Isaac Ezban gets started that may be the thoughts in your head. His latest genre creation is the awkwardly brilliant film THE SIMILARS. When a group is stranded in a bus station on a hellish night of storms, things that play out in the station become more sinister. Fans of Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone and even the new Netflix series Black Mirror will get a kick out of this strange and eerie film. Ezban is on the short list for future masters of the genre craft.
The names, stories and backgrounds of all the characters in THE SIMILARS will become irrelevant soon in the film. Why? Well it’s due to the viewer being captivated by the nostalgic look of the film. Soon more comes into play as film goers will be scratching their heads trying to find out what’s really at play here. It’s a less than successful journey that still has your eyes captivated from the start. Not that the actors aren’t brilliant in their own regards with great performances. Why not leave this place of purgatory? These questions and many more will fill the thoughts of those watching. To say THE SIMILARS is a head turner is truly an understatement. One could only guess as to the mind state of Ezban while working on a feature like this but after seeing the film imagination seems to be the number one factor.
THE SIMILARS won’t be the easiest film for people to get into as the early details aren’t easy to follow. Those who strap in for the full ride will receive more than they asked for towards the climax and conclusion. When there are announcements such as the return of the Tales From The Crypt returning we know an entry to the abyss of the weird and strange is what fans are looking for. They will get that and so much more with cult looking beauty know as THE SIMILARS
THE SIMILARS is directed by Isaac Ezban and stars Gustavo Sánchez Parra, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Fernando Becerril and Humberto Busto. XLrator Media will be releasing THE SIMILARS (“Los Parecidos”) on Cable VOD on Nov. 15, 2016 and on iTunes and Digital on Nov. 22, 2016. It will also have one-night screenings in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
