Cult films can sometimes be a rarity with the over exposure of off the all fantasy garb found throughout cinema these days. Though certain films just scream CC the minute you see them. That happens to be the case for feature from Bill Watterson DAVE MADE A MAZE. In all honesty I didn’t know what to expect from this film but after watching only one thing came to mind. DAVE MADE A MAZE is a f***d up fantasy!
The whimsical and often at times just plain ridiculous film follows Dave (Nick Thune) who just can’t seem to finish anything he starts. So one day he decides to build something that makes “Smokey” from the FRIDAY franchise say “What are you trying to build a clubhouse?” It becomes so much more than that. I won’t give any details away but once inside of the maze it will be hard to tell if you are watching a Pink Floyd video or an episode of Letter People Land. It’s just that damn bat sh** crazy. Entertaining to say the least it’s hard to turn away from this film as the unexpected happens in every section. As with any film of this caliber it can be very polarizing but some people can really expect to fall in love with this weird little treat.
On screen chaos is what you expecting with a film like DAVE MADE A MAZE. It’s just the type of film to excel in this world full of festival darling weirdness. The charm and the appeal will resonate with genre fans through and through. For the casual viewer not so much. They will just see this as an over the head attempt to be quirky with no form of substance to keep the story compelling. Honestly either thought could be accurate which is exactly why films of this caliber work.
